Brief description
Established in 2012, the Adroit Journal’s Summer Mentorship Program is a virtual opportunity that connects high school students, including graduating seniors and gap year students with experienced writers. The program focuses on exploring the creative writing process, including drafting, revising, and editing. The summer mentorship usually offers guidance in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction/memoir.
Full description
Rather than structured instruction, the program emphasizes personalized, flexible, and informal correspondence between mentors and students. Poetry participants will submit work weekly to both mentors and peers, while fiction and creative nonfiction/memoir students will do so every two weeks. Applicants should have a strong work ethic, some experience with writing and revision, and be open to both giving and receiving feedback. They should also be engaged, communicative, and eager to grow as writers. This mentorship does not grant academic credit and is not a direct path to publication in The Adroit Journal. Instead, it is designed for writers who are eager to explore, discuss, and push themselves creatively in a supportive, dynamic environment. More than 65% of past mentorship participants have gone on to attend Ivy League universities, Stanford, Oxford, or Cambridge. You can view the full list of alumni colleges on the program website.
