Full description
Boston University's Summer Journalism Academy offers high school students a chance to enhance their journalism skills and get a taste of college life, either by staying on campus or learning remotely from home. Taught by professional journalists, the program provides real-world insights and hands-on experience. Every lesson connects directly to practical application, as students take on real reporting assignments and experience the daily life of a news reporter. Each day of the Summer Journalism Academy at Boston University begins with a collegiate-style review of journalism fundamentals, using a university-level textbook for readings and assignments. Topics include story development, research, interviewing, writing for different media, accuracy, ethics, and more. Before lunch, students transition to a newsroom environment, where instructors act as editors, assigning stories and guiding small reporting teams. Throughout the day, students apply their skills by conducting interviews and gathering information around campus and Boston, covering topics like politics, sports, and human interest stories. Their work contributes to a portfolio of original reporting. The program also features guest talks from journalism professionals on topics such as media law, radio reporting, and journalism education. Students visit newsrooms like WBUR and The Boston Globe to gain firsthand insight from working journalists.
